Using the Internet

The Internet at Spring Grove
As with many activities in life the internet has dangers and benefits particularly when used by children.

Rather than not allow the Internet we have thought very carefully about the dangers and and allow the use of the Internet in a carefully guided and controlled environment where the children can take advantage of the wealth of benefits with the risks being carefully assesed and controlled

A sophisticated filtering system is in place that monitors all sites visited and, as far as possible, prevents unsuitable material from being seen.
The same system records all sites that every student attempts to access and alerts the network administrator when an attempt is made to access an unsuitable site

If you are a parent of a Spring Grove pupil and you have any questions to ask or need any advice then please don't hesitate to get in touch with the school.

Using the Internet at home

The Internet is a valuable and useful resource and one that should not be denied your children.
There are, however, many dangers and parents need to be aware of what their children are doing on the Internet and to talk about it with them.

This is specially important with Chat Rooms and other messaging services which would not be allowed in schools but provide children with access to people they do not know in the outside world. ChatDanger can give you more advice.

The children must be taught to follow certain rules when using the Internet at home and the SMART RULES published by Kidsmart are a good place to start.

There is a recent trend for young people to record information about themselves for others to see and make new friends by using the internet.

This is known as Social Networking and is delt with in more detail on its elsewhere (click here)

Some simple precautions which you can take yourself:

  • be aware of what the computer is being used for and take an interest in what your child is doing on the computer.
  • tell your child not to give out personal information such as last name, address, phone number, photographs etc
  • be particularly vigilant if your child uses 'chat rooms' or wants to use the computer in private a lot.
