25th September 2008 - Issue No 4
From the headmaster:
We are really looking forward to tomorrow’s European Day of Languages. The children will need to bring a £1 to pay for the privilege of coming in costume dressing as a European character, perhaps one from a book that they have read. Such occasions are always full of good fun and the assembly at the start of the day should be very colourful.
Many of the children found the swimming pool rather cold last week. We have now managed to secure the doors onto the frame cover which has helped retain warmth and, more importantly, protects the swimmers from the blasts of cool air. The children have found swimming to be a much more pleasurable experience this week and we hope to continue with lessons during the course of the first half of term. I have asked Mr Williams for a regular update on the pool temperature and for this to be posted on the parents’ notice board in the car park.
Parking
I am delighted about the positive response to the change of parking rules. The area in front of the main building feels significantly safer this week. Drivers still occasionally drive too quickly and I have spoken to them about the dangers they are creating. Please be vigilant at all times.
Musicians
Our first informal concert of the year takes place tomorrow afternoon at 4.45pm when we shall have an opportunity to hear some of our talented young musicians. All parents are invited.
Hockey
I have been able to watch a number of our young sportsmen and women this term and yesterday I saw a very fine performance from our Under 11 girls against Wellesley House. The game was tremendously close and both teams tackled and ran tenaciously. I was proud of the girls’ teamwork, their support for each other and their excellent behaviour on and off the field. We conceded a goal in the last minute of playing time and so lost 2 – 1.
Pauline Setterfield
We are delighted to announce that Pauline Setterfield had a healthy baby girl last Monday, they have called her Ruby. Mother and baby are both well.
Hever Castle
On Tuesday 23rd September Year 3 and Prep 4 went to Hever Castle. The journey was long but it was definitely worth it! First we went on an exclusive tour around the castle with very knowledgeable guides. The children learnt a lot about the Tudors, especially Anne Boleyn who had actually lived in the castle. After the tour we looked around the beautiful Italian Garden and had lunch at the Pavillion. Of course the water maze beckoned and the children had a fantastic but very wet time. After getting the children changed we were able to pay a quick visit to the miniature house collection. The children were very tired on the return journey yet they still were eager to receive their goodie bags. A great time was had by all, the children all behaved well. One of the Hever staff members by the water maze commented that they were the most well behaved children that had ever visited! Well done Year 3 and Prep 4 for making this such a lovely trip.
Big Book Bank
F3 - P6 will have the opportunity to participate in the Waterstone’s Big Book Bank any time between Monday 29th September and Friday 24th October. The idea is simple:
Choose a book from home that you’ve read and enjoyed.
Take the book to school and put it in the Big Book Bank
Tell others what you liked about the book by writing a review on a Big Book Bank sticker. (Mrs Howes will supply these.)
Your books go to your class library for others to enjoy.
In return, you’ll receive a Waterstone’s voucher for a recommended FREE book (one voucher per child).
The Big Book Bank will be located on the landing on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday lunch breaks
Kitchen Award
Congratulations to Helen and the kitchen staff for being awarded 4 Stars by the Environmental officer for the hygiene standards of the kitchen.
Christmas Card Project
The closing date for receiving artwork is October 3rd. Each child's Christmas card design will be printed on to cards (which come in packs of 12). On the back of each card will be the words 'This card was designed by (name) of Spring Grove School, Wye'. These make the perfect card for friends and family. Please could the children hand the artwork, with the completed entry form and correct payment to their form teachers, who hold a special envelope for receiving material.
Christmas Puddings
SPRING GROVE CHRISTMAS PUDDING LABEL DESIGN COMPETITION
For the past 3 years, Spring Grove has produced the ‘Spring Grove Christmas Pudding’ which has proved hugely popular. They are made by the Ultimate Plum Pudding Company in Cumbria using top quality ingredients and are absolutely delicious. This is the ‘Rolls Royce’ of puddings* – according to some, even better than home made! We have a personalized ‘Spring Grove’ label which incorporates drawings by the children, and by selling the puddings, we raise money for the school. An order form will be sent out to parents in a few weeks, and the puddings will be ready for collection at the Spring Grove Christmas Fair in December. (*winner of the Gold Great Taste Award).
Each pupil is asked to produce a drawing, and one drawing from each year group will be chosen and placed on the label. Please have drawings in by FRIDAY 10TH OCTOBER. Forms will be in bookbags today.
