Autumn 2008

Planting of the Commemoration Tree
Sunday, 5th October 2008
tree1Tree3Tree2

On Sunday, 5th October 2008 a tree was planted to commemorate the opening of Spring Grove in 1965.
Ken Thorne and Brian Harris did the planting (helped by me banging in some poles and taking photographs!),
Carolann Smith-Dorrien, the daughter of the Christophersons who owned Spring Grove when it became a school in 1965;Jill Moffatt, who was the first cook at the school and Molly Newman who was the housekeeper at the time the school began, all braved the rain to take part in the planting ceremony.
When the tree has become established next year a circular bench will be built around the tree.

Visit by Lt Col Henry Worsley
Wednesday, 1st October

hw1 Our special visitor to Spring Grove this week was Lt Col Henry Worsley, uncle to Imogen and Angus Stainton and, along with his fellow Antarctic explorers, descendant of a member of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s team of explorers that tried to reach the South Pole at the start of the 20th Century.  In an enthralling talk he told us the story of Shackleton, how he was courageous enough to step into the unknown, to take calculated risks but also wise enough to know when to turn back.  He showed us the sledge and the contents therein that he will pull some 900 miles across the ice starting at the end of October.  Fewer people have undertaken this journey than have stood on the moon!  All members of his party have some connection with the original Shackleton expedition, but coincidentally, his main team of three also have a strong link with Spring Grove School.   Their journey also acts an opportunity for the launch of the Shackleton Foundation which seeks to identify and nurture vision and leadership amongst young people.
“The Foundation hopes that beneficiaries will develop or possess the personal qualities that define leadership: a fierce personal commitment to succeed, a willingness to take intelligent risks, and the ability to inspire and energise those around them to do their utmost towards worthwhile causes.”

Who can tell what inspiration our Spring Grove children might have derived from this story but I am sure that we shall all follow their progress with great interest and look forward to hearing of their arrival at the South Pole some time after the start of the Spring Term 2009! We wish them all the best!

Form 3 and Prep 4 visit to Hever Castle

Hever
See the Slide Show

On Tuesday 23rd September Year 3 and Prep 4 went to Hever Castle.
The journey was long but it was definitely worth it!
First we went on an exclusive tour around the castle with very knowledgeable guides.  The children learnt a lot about the Tudors, especially Anne Boleyn who had actually lived in the castle.
After the tour we looked around the beautiful Italian Garden and had lunch at the Pavilion.  Of course the water maze beckoned and the children had a fantastic but very wet time.  After getting the children changed we were able to pay a quick visit to the miniature house collection.
The children were very tired on the return journey yet they still were eager to receive their goodie bags.  A great time was had by all, the children all behaved well.  One of the Hever staff members by the water maze commented that they were the most well behaved children that had ever visited!
Well done Year 3 and Prep 4 for making this such a lovely trip.
