Sunday saw the inaugural Spring Grove fathers’ cricket match. A number of dads had asked if they could help organize something like this as it would give them the opportunity to gather together and enjoy an afternoon of cricket while at the same time meeting other fathers they would not normally have the time to meet due to work commitments. The idea was to plan for the first match to take place in the summer of 2007 but the spirit of the Ashes took hold and a match was quickly arranged against a "wandering cavaliers" type team based in Newham near Faversham. It was a wonderful afternoon helped by the excellent weather. The fathers were supported by a large crowd who had either gathered to cheer on the players from Spring Grove or had caught the smells coming from the B-B-Q! For the record the SG fathers won the match with fine bowling performances from Guy Parker, Aran de Moubray, Ed Cottrell and Jonathan Wills. The star of the batting was Oliver Saxby who laid the foundation that enabled the rest of the team to chase down the Newham Cavaliers score of 125. Next summer we are hoping to arrange at least 5 cricket matches so that we can give as many fathers as possible an opportunity to play for the school. In order to get more fathers involved in other social aspects of the school we are going to be arranging a regular 5 a side football night and the occasional golf day.
